About the app

Peep & The Big Wide World Paint Splat

Ready, Set, Splat! In this Paint Splat app, which features the hilariously quirky duck, Quack and his plucky robin friend, Chirp, kids make Quack jump on paint tubes to mix colors on the fence. Watch out for the hose!

Paint Splat offers kids the opportunity to experiment with mixing colors or match a color Chirp holds up a on a card. If the color orange, purple or green (which make up the secondary color group) is successfully created, Chirp offers some of the harder-to-mix tertiary colors. Like many of our games, this one gets harder only if the player is succeeding.

By tapping on the paint tubes, players can make Quack squirt up to two blobs of blue, yellow, and red paint onto a fence. Tapping on the hose washes the paint off, enabling kids to have a fresh start.

Kids can experiment with mixing whatever colors they like or they can try to match the color Chirp holds up.

The PEEP and the Big Wide World Paint Splat app from WGBH was produced by WGBH, the producers of PEEP and the Big Wide World, with additional development work by CloudKid. The animated series PEEP and the Big Wide World gives wings to the innovative idea of teaching science to preschoolers. Wry and distinctive visual humor, charming plotlines, and lovable characters combine with a comprehensive science curriculum to attract and engage kids three to five years old.

“My daughter is very new to spelling, having taken a whole word reading approach so far rather than phonics and having a significant visual impairment – we have noticed that she only looks at the first letters of words. Special Spelling is worth its weight in gold as we try to introduce her to the world of spelling and looking beyond the first letters.”

“At first I thought it would be beyond my daughter as she only recognizes a few letters but her ability to match the letters after I’d customized the levels in the settings has made this one of her favourite apps to date.”
Suzie, Parent

About Teachley: Fractions Boost

Teachley: Fractions Boost is an exciting 3D racing game that helps children in 3rd-5th grades gain conceptual understanding of fractions while learning how to represent them on a number line. Children race through a futuristic world, driving through number line checkpoints and fraction tunnels.

This engaging game, designed by teachers, features built-in lessons and powerful scaffolds to deepen children’s knowledge of fractions. Teachley: Fractions Boost covers all of 3rd grade fractions standards, including comparison and equivalence of fractions.

This app will transform the way children learn and understand fractions!

“Teaching number sense is really difficult for elementary school students. Teaching fraction number sense can be even harder. My students frequently would “sneak” playing Fractions Boost, and I would pretend not to notice that they were playing extra rounds.” – Nick, 4th grade teacher, VT.

“Fractions are often such a difficult concept to teach. I’m so thankful that Teachley has made a game that is equally engaging as it is entertaining!” – Heather Holinger, 4th grade teacher, ME.

Fractions Boost is aligned with all 3rd grade Common Core fractions standards and other state standards, including:

Common Core – 3.NF.A.1, 3.NF.A.2a, 3.NF.A.3b, 3.NF.A.3c, and

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.2b Represent a fraction a/b on a number line diagram by marking off a lengths 1/b from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size a/b and that its endpoint locates the number a/b on the number line.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3d Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3a Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line.

TEKS – 2.3.A-B, 3.3.A-C, 3.3F-H

About Teachley: Mt. Multiplis

About the game:

Linka gets caught in a terrible storm while flying home after a successful treasure hunt. She escapes but her plane isn’t as lucky. Help Linka make her way through Mt. Multiplis by building bridges, unlocking treasure, and earning gems. Rebuild Linka’s plane by collecting the pieces from the greedy Crags who live on the island.

Developed by teachers and experts in children’s cognition and learning, Mt. Multiplis is an engaging game that teaches multiplication through the commutative and distributive properties. While most multiplication apps focus on drill with digital worksheets and flashcards, Mt. Multiplis scaffolds learning to promote conceptual understanding, efficiency with multiplication strategies, and fact fluency.

The Common Core State Standards expect third graders to use the distributive property when multiplying (CCSM.3.OA.B.5): “Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56.” Mt. Multiplis is designed to make this complex content more approachable and fun for kids. Students can think strategically, seeing how 7 x 8 is the same as 5 groups of 8 plus 2 more groups of 8.

Supports Response to Intervention programs:

Mt. Multiplis is a great tool for classroom teachers looking to differentiate instruction for students. The app is also great for parents who want to support their children’s learning.

Recommended Grades: 3rd-5th (6th-8th intervention)

Meets Common Core Math Standards:

-3.OA.A.1 -3.OA.A.3 -3.OA.A.7 -3.OA.B.5
