Best Coding & Programming Apps for Kids

Coding can be hard to learn and often not very engaging for kids (or adults), but this selection of apps helps kids learn how to code in fun and interactive ways.

We’ve selected highly rated coding apps that cater to a range of ages from pre-readers to teens (and adults), with age-based recommendations that you can use as a rough guide. Also, while many apps are available on both Android and Apple devices, they are usually available as web-based programs too. Finally, cost. We’ve included a couple of free apps, but most coding apps are subscription-based (be aware that most auto-renew!) and may seem expensive when compared to other educational apps.

About the app

Peep & The Big Wide World Paint Splat

Ready, Set, Splat! In this Paint Splat app, which features the hilariously quirky duck, Quack and his plucky robin friend, Chirp, kids make Quack jump on paint tubes to mix colors on the fence. Watch out for the hose!

Paint Splat offers kids the opportunity to experiment with mixing colors or match a color Chirp holds up a on a card. If the color orange, purple or green (which make up the secondary color group) is successfully created, Chirp offers some of the harder-to-mix tertiary colors. Like many of our games, this one gets harder only if the player is succeeding.

By tapping on the paint tubes, players can make Quack squirt up to two blobs of blue, yellow, and red paint onto a fence. Tapping on the hose washes the paint off, enabling kids to have a fresh start.

Kids can experiment with mixing whatever colors they like or they can try to match the color Chirp holds up.

The PEEP and the Big Wide World Paint Splat app from WGBH was produced by WGBH, the producers of PEEP and the Big Wide World, with additional development work by CloudKid. The animated series PEEP and the Big Wide World gives wings to the innovative idea of teaching science to preschoolers. Wry and distinctive visual humor, charming plotlines, and lovable characters combine with a comprehensive science curriculum to attract and engage kids three to five years old.

Money Math Duel – Split Screen

Kids (and adults) will have fun playing against family and friends while practicing money math skills. Perfect for elementary-aged kids (ages ~5-10).

More about Money Math Duel – Split Screen

I built Money Math Duel for my daughter who is in second grade and learning currency. I wanted a way for her to practice adding up coins and dollars to get more familiar with making change or paying for items.

Customize each side to make it easier or harder depending on the player. This is a great way to equalize the playing field if one player is stronger than the other. For example, one player can adjust their settings to only generate questions between $15 and $20, while player two can adjust their settings to only generate questions between $0.01 and $1.
